I remember you. You had family problems and everyone in primary and secondary school kept away from your brother, Narendra. I was the only one who befriended him and offered my support. However, he was like a snake and would stab me from the back. Today I look back to my childhood and cannot understand how stupid I was. I should have learnt from people like Anil Bhandari, Piyush Kotecha, Chandrakant Suchak and others to ignore this snake.

At one time, this school was Mtendeni Indian Primary School and the fees were Shillings 12 per month. One day, out of the blue, the fees were doubled to 24 shillings. There were protest meetings by the parents and there was a boycott of the school. Later, school authorities relented and fixed the fees as 18 shillings. After a few years, not only the fees were abolished but the students were handed over free exercise books and the word Indian was dropped from the school name. I was a student there from 1955 for six years. I have encountered sad incidents which I cannot forget even today. One day, in 1955 or in 1956, all the students were made to line up onto the main Morogoro Road. We were told that the Queen's sister was visiting and so we must put up great welcoming act. We waited under the hot African sun and a few toddlers even collapsed. In those days, there was no first aid nor St John's Ambulance. Ultimately, Princess Margaret appeared at mid-day but was in a fast moving motorcade so it was difficult to get a glimpse of her. Couple of years later, it was recess time so we were out in the playground when procession by TANU supporters passed by. This was a very peaceful procession. Some people carried small branches whilst others had playcards demanding self rule. I was told that they were all marching to Upanga where Nyerere was going to address them. Suddenly, there was a great commotion and there was burning paid in the eyes and throats. I later learnt that colonial administration had authorised use of tear gas. Did the authorities not realise that there were toddlers around and they had also been affected? Personally, I now now think this was a crime against humanity. Does anyone remember me during those years? Jay Thakrar

At one time, when I joined this school, it was called Government Indian Secondary School. Later it was re-named Azania Secondary School. I passed my Cambridge School certificate in December 1965 and went for further studies to India in May 1966. After graduating in India in 1970, I went to England. Does anyone remember me? I was also known as Jayu Thakrar. Jay Thakrar
